Each year the Health Foundation will be looking for ideas that tackle a key challenge to high quality health care. The Foundation is looking to invest £75,000 in each of 18 teams from across the health services to put test and develop new ideas. This year, the challenge that the Awards are trying to address is: Find new approaches to delivering healthcare that reduce the need for acute hospital care – while improving quality and saving money. To qualify for the award applicants will need a great innovative idea and the ability to pull together a team from across health various health services with experience in innovation, change management, measurement and self- evaluation. The closing date for completed applications is 12 noon on the 4th October 2010. http://tinyurl.com/3y3uwrz ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ EQUITABLE CHARITABLE TRUST Charitable organisations working towards educating young people, especially young people with disabilities and/or from disadvantaged backgrounds can apply for funding of up to £30,000 through the Equitable Charitable Trust. The Trustees award approximately £1 million a year and seeks to identify and support good projects that address needs not adequately met at present, including those with potential to be introduced to large numbers of schools. Grants made by the Trust fall into three broad categories. Education projects or services that support the learning and development of disabled children and young people in the UK; Education projects for disadvantaged children and young people in the UK, particularly those that support delivery of the National Curriculum or vocational learning opportunities; and Education projects that will help increase participation in, or improve the quality of, education for disadvantaged or disabled children and young people in developing countries. The length of funding can range from one to three years. Previously supported projects include supplementary Maths, English and Science classes for disadvantaged 5-18 year olds; education projects to reduce teenage pregnancies; capital grants for the renovation and refurbishment of facilities for children with complex needs and disabilities; and music education projects for children and young people with profound and multiple learning difficulties. Applications can be submitted at any time and are considered on a rolling basis by the Trustees. http://tinyurl.com/7je7x9 ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ DFID SEEKS NEW FUNDING ARRANGEMENTS WITH STRATEGIC PARTNERS The Department for International Development (DFID) has announced that it is inviting applications for a new round of Programme Partnership Arrangement (PPA) funding for the period from April 2011 to March 2014. PPA’s are strategic level arrangements and provide flexible support to organisations that are best able to demonstrate real and practical impact on poverty reduction and a clear fit with DFID’s values and priorities. Funding is available to most not for profit groups, based in any country, which have a regional (sub continental) or global focus. Subject to decisions in the government spending review, DFID expects to allocate £120m per annum to PPAs. There will be two types of PPA. General PPAs will focus on DFID''s priorities and CSH PPAs will focus on conflict, security and justice and humanitarianism. £20m of funding is ear marked for Conflict, Security and Justice, and Humanitarian (CSH) priorities. There is a two stage application process and organisations wishing to apply need initially to submit a short concept note by the 3rd September 2010. http://tinyurl.com/29zuxuy ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ PROJECTS CONTRIBUTING TO EXCHANGE OF GOOD PRACTICES IN YOUTH EMPLOYMENT AND TRAINING FOR GREEN JOBS The European Commission has issued a new call for proposals under the PROGRESS Programme. The aim of the PROGRESS Programme is to support actions that promote better jobs and social cohesion within the European Union. The main objective of this call is to promote mutual learning and enhance the transferability of the most effective policies in the areas of improving the employment opportunities of young people and to provide training in green technologies. The type of activities that could be supported through this call include, workshops, seminars and targeted information campaigns, etc. Eligible applicants include public or semi-public organisations at national, regional and local levels as well as not for profit organisations and higher education and research institutions active in the areas of employment policy, quality of work and social inclusion. The total budget available is €2,750,000 and there are no maximum or minimum grant levels. The closing date for applications is the 30th September 2010. http://tinyurl.com/2fnbf7h ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ PILOT PROJECT TO ENCOURAGE CONVERSION OF PRECARIOUS WORK INTO WORK WITH RIGHTS The European Commission has announced a call for proposals to fund projects relating to the issue of precarious work in the EU and the ways and means to improve the social rights of people in temporary employment, on fixed-term contracts and temporary agency workers, etc. A total of €650,000 is available to support surveys, research, exchange of information, surveys and seminars, etc on the conversion of precarious work into work with rights. Eligible actions include transnational projects carried out by social partners, public authorities, European or international organisations, non-profit-making organisations, research centres and institutes, universities or civil society organisations. The closing date for applications is the 30th September 2010. http://tinyurl.com/2aenc6n ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ INDIA-UK SCIENTIFIC SEMINARS The Royal Society has announced the launch of a new funding scheme to promote scientific collaboration between the UK and India. Grants of up to £12,000 are available to fund the organisation of a 3 day scientific meeting to bring together groups of mid-career scientists from India and the UK for the purpose of scientific discussion, to promote collaboration and knowledge transfer by encouraging interaction within the wide research community. These scientific meetings would take place in either the UK or India. The number of participants who are invited to the meeting should not exceed more than 20 attendees (5 from visiting country and up to 15 from host country) and can cover the subject areas of the life and physical sciences, including engineering, but excluding clinical medicine. Applicants must have completed a PhD and hold a fixed term contract or permanent position at an eligible UK institution. The closing date for applications is the 25th October 2010. http://tinyurl.com/28qco99 ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ FUNDING FOR COLLABORATION WITH HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS The Scottish Funding Council (SFC) has announced the launch of a new support scheme to support the building of relationships between SMEs (Small to Medium sized Enterprises) and HEIs (Higher Education Institutes) in Scotland. The funding which is being made available through the Innovation Voucher scheme provides grants of between £1,000 and £5,000 to support partnerships between SMEs and HEIs that lead to new products and processes that will benefit the business, the institution and the Scottish economy. The scheme is broad in its application, however funds may not be used to cover the costs of; standard training courses; software purchases; aid that would promote/ subsidise the cost of exports; internships for students of knowledge institutions; design and production of advertising materials; and sales activities. http://tinyurl.com/27uf22x ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ WAITROSE COMMUNITY MATTERS Since the launch of Waitrose Community Matters in 2008, each local Waitrose branch has had £1,000 each month to give to three local organisations. Organisations are nominated each month by customers and partners (Waitrose staff), with the final decision on the three shortlisted organisations made by PartnerVoice forums (Waitrose’s local democratic bodies). Then, Waitrose customers will be given a token every time they shop which is used to vote for one of these organisations by placing the token in one of three Perspex tubes. At the end of the month the tokens for each organisation are weighed. Then the beneficiaries each receive a proportion of the cash. The Gannett Foundation is the charitable arm of Gannett Co Inc., owner of the Newsquest Media Group, one of the UK’s largest publishers. What is the Gannett Foundation Fund? The Gannett Foundation provides funding to support local organisations in the area where Newsquest operates in the UK. The Quartet Community Foundation, on behalf of the Gannett Foundation and Newsquest, manages the Fund. What does the Gannett Foundation support? The Gannett Foundation supports projects which take a creative approach to fundamental issues such as education and neighbourhood improvements, economic development, youth development, community problem solving, assistance to disadvantaged people, environmental conservation and cultural enrichment. Is there anything that is definitely excluded from getting a grant? Grants will not be given to: * individuals * organisations which are not registered charities * national or regional organisations unless the project addresses specific local community needs * promotion of religious causes * endowment funds * general appeals or multi-year campaigns * medical or research organisations * animal charities What size of grant can my group apply for? Grants will be for between £1000 and £5000 but larger grants may be made for exceptional projects. How can I apply? Applications are invited from areas where a newspaper owned by Newsquest Media Group circulates. Applications must be submitted on the approved application form, which may be completed online or obtained from your local Newsquest newspaper office. UK Grants are made twice a year. The times are publicised in the local newspapers. Are there any conditions of Grants? The newspaper will expect you to co-operate with reasonable requests for publicity of any grant given. http://www.gannettfoundation.org/ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ RAYNE FELLOWSHIP FOR REFUGEES The Rayne Fellowships for Refugees is inviting applications for one of its five Fellowships. The Fellowships are open to refugees living in the UK (especially those aged 18-25), and offer up to £15,000 to help the Award holders to get access to support, resources and training. These services are designed to assist the Award holder in helping his or her local community. The deadline for applications is 3 September 2010, and Award holders must start their projects on 17 February 2011.
