Access to a balanced, healthy diet is as important to good mental health as it is to good physical health. Experience from community groups working in the field also suggests that food is a great way to develop new skills, build confidence, a sense of belonging and wider social networks. Constituted organisations can apply for the funding for the following courses: REHIS Elementary Food and Health Course (max 10 per organisation); RSPH Certificate in Nutrition and Health level 3 (max 1 per organisation). Organisations can also apply for funds to pay the costs for staff who meet the eligibility criteria, to register with REHIS as an Elementary Food and Health tutor. Holidays and day trips for young people Who can apply? Charities and other groups representing disadvantaged children Happy Days provides holidays, residential trips, days out and theatre trips for disadvantaged young people, aged between 3 and 17, with special needs. The focus is on children who have learning difficulties, physical or mental disabilities and with acute, chronic or life limiting illnesses. But help is alos offered to young people who have been abused or neglected, witnessed domestic violence, been bereaved or act as carers for a parent or a sibling. Structural repairs to churches and chapels Who can apply? Churches and chapels in the UK What is available? Between £10,000 and £40,000 The National Churches Trust aims to protect and support the built heritage of churches, chapels and meeting houses throughout the UK. Applicant churches can be of any denomination or be members of an umbrella body belonging to Churches Together in Britain and Ireland. Repair grants are for both listed and unlisted churches, chapels and meeting houses of any age, as long as they are open for public worship. Funding is available for structural repairs essential to safeguard the fabric of the building that will cost more than £40,000. Community grants help churches to provide facilities that will benefit the place of worship and local community, e.g. accessible toilets, kitchens and meeting rooms. Priority will be given to projects that involve children or young people, disabled or disadvantaged people, communities, and which enhance the lives of others, rather than the well-being of the applicants themselves. The Foundation offers grants of up to £1,000 to support activities which provide opportunities to people of any age with physical or mental disabilities; projects which help local groups to conserve and restore their landmark, landscape, traditions and culture; projects which are involved in improving the facilities or quality of life for people in a deprived neighbourhood; groups involved in undertaking a particular activity in any field of performing and visual arts. B&Q operates this Scheme through all of its stores within the UK. B&Q donates products and waste materials they haven''t been able to sell for re-use such as slightly damaged tins of paint, off-cuts of timber, odd rolls of wallpaper and end-of-range materials. Donated products should benefit the local community and the environment and can not be resold. Due to its Health and Safety scheme, electrical, petrol and gas items are not available for donation. Applications must be made directly to B&Q stores. Applications to the scheme can be made at any time. www.diy.com/wastedonation ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ GRANTS FOR PLANTING TREES The Tree Council, the lead tree campaigning charity working to promote the importance of trees within the changing environment has announced that its Trees for Communities and Trees for Schools grant making programmes are now open for applications. Funds are available for schools and community groups within the UK who are able to show that children under the age of 16 will be actively engaged in the planting projects. The Tree Council''s National Tree Week is the focus for these projects and successful applicants organise their planting events in conjunction with the Tree Council''s annual celebration of the new tree planting season. The Tree Council are able to fund projects between £100 and £700 and successful applicants will receive up to 75% towards their planting costs. For example, if your project totals £700, The Tree Council would offer up to £525. The remaining 25% will need to be secured by your school or organisation. In the past, Fairway Primary School in Birmingham, Billingham Campus School and Arts College in County Durham and Ardrossan Academy in Scotland received funding from the Tree Council. The closing date is the 31st March 2010. http://www.treecouncil.org.uk/?q=grants ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ THE EUROPEAN FUND FOR THE INTEGRATION OF THIRD-COUNTRY NATIONALS The EU has announced that it is seeking applications through its European Fund for the Integration of Third-country nationals. The fund which is open to national, regional and local authorities, Non Governmental Organisations, public or private bodies (including university departments, research centres) with proven experience and expertise in this field will provide grants of between ?200,000 and ?750,000 for transnational projects that; gather public and migrant perceptions and develop a more comprehensive understanding of the integration processes; promote integration measures targeting young population and addressing specific gender issues; and promote the role of civil society organisations and the local authorities in shaping integration strategies. Since these actions are trans-national, they must include partners from at least five different Member States. Applications need to be submitted by 2 pm on the 3rd march 2010. http://ec.europa.eu/justice_home/funding/integration/funding_integration _en.htm ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ EUROPEAN YOUTH FOUNDATION (EYF) The European Youth Foundation, which is an independent, international, non-governmental organisation dedicated to the positive development of children and young people throughout the world has announced that it is seeking applications that promote international youth meeting and the development of projects that benefits young people and help towards the administrative costs of eligible organisations and networks . The funding is open to international not for profit youth organisations and networks. In addition the Foundation also funds a range of pilot projects. Previous projects supported include "Minorities of Europe" in Coventry, which received a grant of ?7,000 for its "One Europe for All Information Campaign" and "Brouhaha International" in Liverpool, which received a grant of ?15,000 for an intercultural performance work highlighting the rise of gun and knife crime. The next application deadline is the 1st April 2010. http://www.eyf.coe.int/fej/ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ GRANTS TO HELP NEW, INNOVATIVE VISUAL ARTS PROJECTS The Elephant Trust offers grants of up to £2,000 to artists and institutions (priority is given to small organisations and galleries) for new, innovative visual arts projects based in the UK. Recipients of grants have included Rachel Whiteread; Vong Phaophanit; and significant contributions have been made to institutions such as Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art; and Hayward Gallery and Camden Arts Centre, London. The next deadline for the submission of applications is 13th April 2010. http://www.elephanttrust.org.uk/docs/intro.html ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE FUND The Architectural Heritage Fund (AHF), is a registered charity that promotes the conservation and regeneration of historic buildings in the UK and is now open to applications. Grants and low interest working capital loans are available to voluntary organisations and building preservation trusts (BPTs) to regenerate historic buildings to create community and education facilities, workspace and homes. To be eligible to apply for financial assistance organisations must have a charitable status. Any charity with a qualifying project can apply for an options appraisal grant, or a loan, but any other AHF''s grants are reserved for BPTs - charities established specially to preserve historic buildings. The project must also involve a change of ownership and/or a change of use. Previously funded projects include turning a run down historic buildings into; Community theatres; Resource centres; Community learning centres; Workspaces; Places to live; and Community meeting places, etc. The next deadline for applications is the 11th of February 2010. http://www.ahfund.org.uk/index.html ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ VOLUNTARY ACTION FUND - COMMUNITY CHEST PROGRAMME The Community Chest can provide grants of up to £1,000 and free training to groups with an annual income under £25,000. Groups can apply for funding for a wide range of activities or operational costs. However, the VAF are particularly keen to fund activities that will help build and develop strong organisations, for example; training for committee members and volunteers; visits to other organisations or conferences; and professional support or consultancy. VAF are also keen to fund groups who meet any of the following criteria; are based in West Dunbartonshire, South Lanarkshire or North Ayrshire; work with disability or health related issues; whose beneficiaries might be disadvantaged through their ethnicity, disability, gender or sexual orientation; and Provide childcare. Applications for the Community Chest programme are welcome throughout the year with the next deadline being the 31 March 2010. Other deadlines are the 30 June, 30 September and the 31st December. http://www.voluntaryactionfund.org.uk/5,40/grants/communty_chest/ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ YOUNG FILM FUND First Light Movies provides grants to projects that enable young people to participate in all aspects of film productions. Since launching in 2001, First Light Movies have enabled over 12,000 young filmmakers to write, act, shoot, light, direct and produce over 800 films. The funding is available to organisations such as schools, youth services, community and voluntary groups that work with young people aged between 5 and 18. Every year approximately £700,000 of grants are available through three funding streams. The Studio Awards provides grants of up to £30, 000 for between two and four films of up to 10 minutes. The Script Awards provides grants of up to £3,000 for script writing projects that team young people with script professionals. The Pilot Awards provides grants of up to £5,000 for one short film of up to five minutes in duration. Previous grants awarded included Hartside Primary School, County Durham, which received a grant of £3,000 to help produce a five minute shadow puppet film using an original fairy tale devised, told and filmed by the children in Year 1 and Balfour Junior School in Brighton, which received funding to make an environmental documentary ''The Amazing Adventures of the Plastic Bag''. The Script and Pilot elements of the fund will re-open for applications on the 2nd March and closes for applications on the 27th April 2010. http://www.firstlightonline.co.uk/funding/young-film-fund ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ THE LINKS FOUNDATION The Links Foundation, which was formed by ''Working Links'', an organisation that delivers services to tackle social exclusion and poverty by helping disadvantaged individuals and communities, provides grants to disadvantaged communities. Since its launch in 2003 it has distributed over £3 million in grants to over 40 projects. The type of activities that the Foundation seeks to support include projects that advance people''s education; reduce significant disadvantage; assist those in conditions of poverty, need or distress ; and provide for recreational or other leisure time occupation. The Foundation can fund new or existing projects and can help meet costs such as salary, rent and stationery as well as capital costs. The average grant per project is about £20,000. Previously funded activities include arts, crafts and drama facilities for residents on a deprived estate; funding apart-time caseworker to support vulnerable and disadvantaged young people; and supporting people with disabilities to become self-employed. The Board meets every four months.
